Women & Gender Based Violence

When women thrive, all of society benefits, and succeeding generations are given a better start in life.

~Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General~

Chanyra was a victim of an acid attack and hopeless when she arrived at Hagar. Read her story of here.

Hagar's Women's Shelter is a place of hope.  It is the starting point for many Cambodian women on their journey to healing after sustained domestic violence. The shelter is safe and secure. Women and their children are surrounded by loving house mothers, caring counselors and supportive staff.

Did You Know?
  • More than 30% of Cambodian women are illiterate.
  • 1 in 5 women aged 15-49 who have been married have experienced violence in their families.
  • An estimated 64% of the country's sex workers have been forced into prostitution.
  • Many rape cases still go unreported in Cambodia. Social stigma prevents many women from seeking help.

At Hagar's Women's Shelter, women do not have to worry about finding their next meal or about feeding their children and keeping them safe. Hagar provides all of their basic needs - shelter, food, clothing and medical care.

As women are ready, they begin the next stage of their journey to recovery - counseling and psychosocial therapy. Trained Cambodian counselors use a range of creative counseling and therapy techniques that help women work through the trauma they have experienced.

Children who come with their mothers to Hagar's shelter are cared for by trained nursery school attendants, in preschool, or through Catch-Up education at Hagar's Community Learning Centre

As women rest, learn literacy and vocational skills, and as they begin to feel a part of a community, they start to heal.
