"Before, I felt like I was living in a deep, dark well with no light. My life is so much better than before." -Chenda- Read her story here |
Hagar restores women and children who have been victims of human rights abuse to life in all its fullness. Recovery can take a long time, but Hagar is committed for the long run - until each woman and child is able to reintegrate into community again.
Trauma Recovery Centres provide critical crisis care including safe and secure shelter, food and clothing, and intensive counseling and therapy. Whether a woman is fleeing domestic abuse, a young girl is escaping from sexual exploitation, or a child has been abandoned by family and friends, these shelters are the first step on the journey to healing.
Building Resilience: Hagar's goal is justice, dignity and empowerment for the women and children who come to us. Education, literacy classes, life and vocational skill development, social enterprise and job placements are all crucial pieces in Hagar's recovery model. A growing sense of community and friendship is also part of building resilience. As women and children experience all these things, they come to see themselves as valuable and whole once again.
Reintegration: Hagar believes the best place for women and children to be is living life in all its fullness in community. Hagar's ultimate goal is that each woman and child will reintegrate into the community financially independent, confident, resilient, and with dignity. Hagar is committed to following up with each woman and child for up to two years after they reintegrate into community.
