Hagar Soya Limited (HSL) began as a small micro enterprise in 1998 that made 300 litres of fresh, hand made soy milk per day in Phnom Penh. The business employed women from Hagar's programs.
After 10 years of operation, the Hagar Board has divested HSL to the current General Manager who is starting a new soya milk and nutrional products company. This new company will employ most former HSL staff and remain a strong Hagar partner.
So! Soya's Story:
1998 - Hagar Soya Limited is born. Women from Hagar's programs produce 300 litres of fresh soya milk per day and sell the product on the streets of Phnom Penh from push carts.
2003 - With funding from the International Finance Corporation, Hagar expanded its production to 1,000 litres of soya milk per hour using UHT processing to ensure affordability and a long shelf life.
2007 - Nestle donated one of its factories to Hagar Soya and throughout thatyear, the enterprise began moving into the new facility with plans to increase production even further.
2008 - Lacking the capital needed to renovate the factory and expand production, HSL returned to its roots and continued to produce 500-1000 litres of fresh soya milk per day.
2009 - Hagar divests Hagar Soya Limited but the story lives on in a new soya milk and nutritional products company that maintains a strong partnership with Hagar.
