Hagar believes that the very best place for a child to be is with their family. When it is not possible for children to return to their family of origin or extended family, Hagar seeks loving and caring community based care as an alternative.
Children who enter Hagar's community based care program typically stay at the Trauma Recovery Centre for age where they are ready to reintegrate into community, Hagar will place them with a foster family who will commit to caring for them until they reach adulthood and can live independently.
Hagar works with the local church to identify families who are willing to provide a safe and happy home for children. Siblings are not separated, but placed together in homes. Families are provided with training and support to care for each child and Hagar provides the child with food, clothing, education and medical care.
As the child transitions to their new surroundings, Hagar staff continue to make house visits to ensure their wellbeing.
Surrounded by a caring foster family as well as friends and community, children are supported and encouraged as they grow into adults and develop a sense of belonging and learn to contribute to their community.
